Sales are up. You feel fine about the year. And somehow there's never any money. There's a name for that, and almost nobody in the States uses it.
I want to give you a word today.
A real business owner wrote this on a forum, describing the thing exactly. He wasn't losing money, he said. But he wasn't really gaining either. His overheads ate up most of the gross profit he needed to invest in new stock. Without the new stock he couldn't grow. And without growth he was stuck in a cycle.
Not losing. Not gaining. Stuck. Every dollar that comes in goes straight back out into stock.
He described it perfectly and couldn't name it. Someone else in the thread handed him the word.
Overtrading.
Overtrading means growing faster than your cash can carry.
It is not a failure word. You literally cannot overtrade if nothing is selling. It's a disease you only catch by succeeding.
Here's what it looks like from the inside. Sales are up. You feel good about the year. And there's never any cash. Every good month funds the next order. The tax bill comes due on stock you haven't sold yet. You put a container on a credit card and tell yourself it's temporary.
Another owner put it plainly: every penny of profit he's ever made has gone straight back into new stock. No cash at the bank, because everything is reinvested.
And the line that sticks with me most was from an owner who kept looking at similar companies and feeling baffled by how much cash some of them showed. He figured they must know something he didn't.
They don't. They're just further along in noticing.
Why This Is So Easy to Miss
Overtrading never shows up as a loss. On paper, you're profitable. The business looks healthy. Sales charts point up.
The problem hides in the gap between profit and cash. Profit is a number on a report. Cash is what's actually in the bank. In a product business, those two can drift a long way apart, because your profit is sitting on a shelf as inventory, not sitting in your account.
You can be profitable and still be one slow month away from a real problem. That's the trap.
The good thing about having the word is that now you can look for it.
Ask yourself a few honest questions.
How many days of cash are standing on your racks right now, as stock? If you added up everything on your shelves, how many months of sales is it?
Is your next order funded by a customer, or by a credit card?
When the annual tax bill lands, will it be due on money you've collected, or on stock you're still holding?
If those questions make you a little uncomfortable, you're not alone. You've probably been feeling this for two or three years without a name for it. Now it has one.
You don't fix overtrading by selling more. Selling more is what got you here. You fix it by tightening the gap between when your cash goes out and when it comes back in.
That means looking hard at how much stock you really need, how fast it turns, how long your best accounts take to pay you, and how much of your own money and credit you're quietly using to bridge the difference.
None of that is glamorous. All of it is where the cash is.
